Students can intern at a wide variety of local organizations, from sushi restaurants, to publishing companies, to elementary schools! To make searching easier, we’ve classified the internship possibilities into three main types, childhood education, environmental organizations, and community revitalization. In addition, we always invite students who are interested in doing so to reach out to companies independently to see if they are interested in hosting one of our students.

Volunteer with various organizations, stores, and groups that are involved in the local community. Students will have the opportunity to interact with local community members, learn about certain Japanese traditions and more. Past organizations vary greatly so typical responsibilities will also differ.

What does this mean?
Intermediate: This level of Japanese refers to the level of Japanese proficiency needed to work with this organization. Typically, Intermediate refers to those in JLP levels 3*, 4, 5, and 6.
Advanced: This level of Japanese refers to the level of Japanese proficiency needed to work with this organization. Typically, Advanced refers to those who place in JLP levels 6*, 7, or are in special Japanese courses.
*Depending on the organization if you are in this JLP level, your language proficiency might not be high enough to perform certain task. If you have any questions, please talk to the Community Engagement Coordinator or the contact person for the specific organization.
What does this mean?
Formal: This level of formality refers to organizations that require a higher level of formality. This could include dress, type of speech, actions, etc. For example, if you are working with customers or in an office setting, the volunteer environment might be more formal.
Informal: This level of formality refers to organizations where the expectations are more informal. This could include casual dress, type of speech, actions you might do, etc. For example, organizations that work with kids, particularly if you would be playing games or reading, would be more informal volunteer environments.
What does this mean?
Walk or Bike: These are organizations that are closer to ICU campus. Students typically walk or bike to these locations.
Public Transportation: These are organizations that are located a little farther from campus, and may be most easily accessible through public transit.
