At Nono, in the simplest form, I learned about community. I learned of the importance of local businesses and how they always look out for each other. Whether in the form of helping carry another store’s merchandise to their tent at an outdoor market or helping quickly cover free thrifted clothing with a tarp to protect from incoming rain, what makes a community a community is the people.
What I did there depended on the day. Most of the time, I was refilling product jars, cleaning utensils, or gathering ingredients for recipes. When new products came in, I helped count and update inventory with the staff. On days with community dinners, I helped cook. There were also trash collection days, when we would walk the neighborhood and clean the streets nearby. I sometimes updated the store’s Instagram and translated when needed.
