Mitaka Organic Farm, located between Mitaka and Chofu, has been in operation since the Edo period, specializing in pesticide-free, organic vegetables. The farm offers local residents opportunities to participate in hands-on workshops and activities to learn about local agriculture. 

Level of Japanese: Intermediate 

Responsibilities: As an intern on the farm, you will mainly assist staff members on outdoor tasks including weed removal, seed planting, trimming foliage, harvesting crops, feeding livestock and the like.

While the work is outside and can be tiring especially on hot days (especially Japan summers), the opportunity was very valuable to learn what it takes to be a farmer during urban agriculture in the outskirts of Tokyo.

“..maintaining good verbal communication was needed constantly on the farm because farm-work relies on real-time cooperation. In other words, I had many chances to practice speaking Japanese while working on the farm.”
